Viking Lander

Viking 2 launched 36 years ago today on Sept. Lander on Mars Viking 1 was the first American spacecraft to touch the surface of Mars and the first spacecraft ever to remain there for the long term.

Viking lander. The Viking program consisted of a pair of identical American space probes Viking 1 and Viking 2 which landed on Mars in 1976. The Soviet Mars 3 lander claimed a technical first with a survivable landing in 1971 but contact was lost seconds after it touched down. In 1976 NASAs Viking 1 and 2 landers touched down on the Martian surface and proceeded to perform three separate experiments to detect signs of life.

For exploration of Mars Viking represented the culmination of a series of exploratory missions that had begun in 1964. The Mars 3 soft lander made the first successful landing but only transmitted 20 seconds of data before it failed. Each orbiter-lander pair flew together and entered Mars orbit.

They were produced by the Science Digital Data Preservation Task by copying data directly off of old decaying tape media onto more stable CD-WO media. If you want to try it out for yourself you will need a physical model of the Viking Lander. One of those experiments called.

The Mars 2 soft lander crashed on the surface. Both NASA Viking missions used a combination of orbiter and lander to explore Mars in unprecedented detail. The Viking 1 lander set down in Chryse Planitia on 20 July and the Viking 2 lander descended to Utopia Planitia on 3 September on the opposite side of Mars.

The first month of orbit was devoted to imaging the surface to find appropriate landing sites for the Viking Landers. Each spacecraft was composed of two main parts. Printing and Assembling the Viking Lander.

In 1975 two large NASA orbiterlanders Viking 1 and 2 were launched by powerful Titan-Centaurs. Actual size In August and September of 1975 the Viking program dispatched two orbiters and two landers to Mars - the most ambitious and expensive mission ever sent to Mars at more than 1 billion in then-year dollars. Arriving in June and July 1976 they entered orbit and began surveying for landing sites.

Besides taking photographs and collecting other science data on the Martian surface the two landers conducted three biology experiments designed to look for possible signs of life. Experiments on the lander as well as on Viking 2 seemed to indicate the presence of.

It followed a series of. NASAs Viking 1 lander launched on a 10-month journey to Mars on August 20 1975. The landers then separated and descended to the planets surface.

The Viking mission used two identical spacecraft each consisting of a lander and an orbiter. The Viking landers were the first completely successful spacecrafts to land on Mars. The Viking 1 spacecraft was inserted into Mars orbit on 19 June 1976 and trimmed to a 1513 x 33000 km 2466 hr site certification orbit on 21 June.

Viking 1 consisted of both an orbiter and a lander designed to take high-resolution images and study the Martian surface and atmosphere. The same Viking Lander model is also used by Unity Samples. The total cost of the Viking project was roughly one billion dollars.

Imaging of candidate sites was begun and the landing site was selected based on these pictures. The Viking 1 lander touched down on the western slope of Chryse Planitia the Plains of Gold while the Viking 2 lander settled down at Utopia Planitia. Viking conducted experiments on the soil and took photographs while it was on the surface of Mars then sent the data back to Earth.

Viking was NASAs first lander to carry instruments capable of doing chemical or physical analysis. The orbiters also served as communication relays for the landers once they touched down. NASAs Viking 1 made the first truly successful landing on Mars.
